Coaching is a process through which the coach counsels, motivates and supports clients to help them determine and achieve specific personal and professional goals. The coach supports their clients in achieving these goals by providing training, advice, guidance and a ‘sounding board’ for ideas and concerns.

Coaching has become very popular in recent times, as many people prefer its proactive, action-oriented approach to more traditional forms of help such as psychotherapy and counselling. Coaching differs from these modalities in that it focuses on specific objectives and the tasks required to achieve these rather than helping clients to heal their minds and overcome personal problems and trauma. Coaching is similar to mentoring, but places more emphasis on helping clients with specific goals than mentoring, which focuses more on a person’s overall development and character.
